Recreational swimming lessons teach water confidence, safety and stroke technique without the pressure of racing. Rocket Swim Club runs them across four west-end Toronto pools, for children, adults and Masters swimmers.

Every swimmer follows one progression path. A coach places you by what you can do in the water rather than by your age, then tracks each skill you master through the club’s SPORTECOS system. Below you will find what each program covers, how placement works, what it costs, where we swim, and how to pick a starting point.

Book a swim assessment. It takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs $17.

What are recreational swimming lessons?

Recreational swimming lessons are structured, non-competitive classes built around water confidence, safety and everyday stroke technique. Competitive training shapes race times and meet-ready technique. Recreational lessons give you comfort in the water and a skill you keep for life.

At Rocket Swim this is the non-competitive swimming program, for swimmers who want proper strokes and water safety while keeping swimming fun. If racing appeals later, the competitive program sits alongside it and swimmers can move across. You can read more about the club on the about page.

What recreational swim programs does Rocket Swim offer?

Rocket Swim runs five recreational routes into the water.

Each has its own entry point, and a coach will point you to the right one after your assessment.

Rocket Swim Club recreational routes: non-competitive, adult and Masters, private, family and summer camp

Non-competitive program

The non-competitive program is where most children start. It builds water confidence, strong technique and the skills needed for safe swimming throughout life, with no obligation to compete. Swimmers work in progressive groups, Novice 3 through Novice 1, organised by ability rather than age. A child who picks things up quickly moves at their own pace, and a child who needs longer gets it.

If you are weighing up whether your baby is ready for the water, our guide to baby swimming lessons covers what to look for in a first class.

Adult swimming lessons and Masters

The adult program takes adults from Masters wellbeing through to Masters performance, and starts from 17 years old. Beginners start where they are comfortable. A coach builds trust in the water first and strokes second, so nervous first-timers are not thrown in at the deep end.

Further along that path, Masters gives adults coached training with real structure: technique work, sets and fitness, with no requirement to race. Masters suits you if you want a coached workout instead of swimming laps alone, if you are coming back after years away, or if running and gym training have started to punish your joints.

Adults who register alongside their children receive a 20% discount on the adult program.

Private swimming lessons

Private coaching gives you one-to-one time with a coach. Swimmers use it to move faster through the levels, to fix a stroke that has stalled, or because they would rather learn without a group watching.

Family swim lessons

Family swimming lessons put parents and children in the water together. Families with more than one swimmer often prefer this to running between separate class times.

Summer swim camp

Summer camp at Sherkston gives swimmers a concentrated block of water time over the school holidays, with the social side a weekly lesson cannot offer.

Not sure which fits? Book an assessment and a coach will place you.

What are the group sizes?

Group size varies as swimmers advance. Early groups cover broad water confidence and run smaller.

Group Coach-to-swimmer ratio
Novice 1 and Novice 2 1:8
Novice 3 1:4
Masters 1:10

Masters runs lane-based, so a larger group works the way a squad session does anywhere: the coach sets the work and corrects across the lanes.

Rocket Swim coach ratios: 1:4 for Novice 3, 1:8 for Novice 1 and 2, 1:10 for lane-based Masters

Who coaches at Rocket Swim?

Every Rocket Swim coach holds National Lifeguard (NL) certification and a minimum of NCCP Swimming 101 through the National Coaching Certification Program. Most bring competitive swimming backgrounds and years of coaching behind that.

The lifeguarding certification matters more than it sounds. It means the person teaching your child is trained and current in water rescue, not only in instruction.

How do swim levels work?

Levels run as one continuous path. You advance by showing a coach you can do the skills, so placement rests on ability and comfort in the water rather than your birthday.

How does the assessment work?

A coach watches you swim for 10 to 15 minutes, looking at basic skills and how comfortable you are in the water. From that, the club recommends a program, a group and a training frequency.

Rocket Swim assessment: 10 to 15 minutes, $17 once, what to bring and the placement you receive

The assessment costs $17, covering the administration fees. It is not a pass or fail test. Its only job is to put you where the teaching will be safe and properly challenging. Bring a swimsuit, goggles, swim cap and towel.

How do swimmers move up?

Coaches assess continuously through the term rather than testing once at the end, so moving up reflects steady progress instead of one good day. Each skill gets recorded as the swimmer masters it, and that record decides when they are ready for the next group.

What is SPORTECOS?

SPORTECOS is the platform behind every Rocket Swim class. It tracks what a swimmer has mastered, marks readiness for the next stage, and ties that progress to member benefits.

SPORTECOS scores mastered skills, unlocks the next level and links progress to member discounts

It works in three parts:

  • Each skill is scored as the swimmer masters it.
  • Mastered skills unlock the next level.
  • Progress unlocks membership discounts.

Because the club logs every skill, you can see exactly what your child has achieved and what comes next, rather than waiting on a report card. Members follow it through the member portal.

My child swam somewhere else. Where will they be placed?

The levels and equivalents chart gives a rough guide to where swimmers from other programs land. Treat it as an estimate. The assessment in the water is what settles it.

How much do swimming lessons cost?

Rocket Swim non competitive groups run on three-month terms. One registration covers a full term of weekly classes.

Non-competitive lessons start at $572 per term for one session a week. Two and three sessions a week cost more, and swimmers training more often progresses faster through the levels, which is why many families step up after the first term.

Rocket Swim lessons from $572 per 3-month term, $17 assessment and 20% off adults joining with a child

On top of lesson fees, budget $17 once for the assessment that places the swimmer.

Adults registering alongside their children take 20% off the adult program.

How do registration and membership work?

Registration runs in four steps:

  1. Submit the form. Swimmer details, experience, availability and program preference.
  2. Attend the assessment. A coach observes for 10 to 15 minutes. The fee is $17.
  3. Receive your placement. The club recommends a program, group and training frequency.
  4. Activate membership. Complete registration through SPORTECOS to hold the spot.

Membership is how you access lessons and how the club records and rewards progress. It covers lesson access, SPORTECOS skill tracking, and member discounts tied to rank.

How do lessons build water confidence and safety?

Lessons build confidence through small, low-pressure steps. For a lot of swimmers the starting point is fear rather than confidence, and that fear carries a real cost in a city sitting on Lake Ontario with cottage country an hour up the highway.

A coach works on comfort in the water first, then layers breath control, floating and movement on top until both confidence and safety hold without you thinking about them. An adult, a five-year-old and a swimmer with a disability all follow that same path, each at their own pace.

Swimming also happens to be gentle on joints while working the whole body, which is one reason adults find their way to Masters after running or the gym starts to hurt. That is general information rather than medical advice, so talk to your physician about your own situation.

How long is a term? Three months. One registration covers the full term.

Can adults who are afraid of water take lessons? Yes. Adult lessons start where you are comfortable, and coaches build trust in the water before they teach strokes. Fear of water is where the class begins, not a reason to stay out of it.

What is the minimum age for adult and Masters lessons? 17.

What qualifications do the coaches hold? Every coach holds National Lifeguard certification and a minimum of NCCP Swimming 101, and most have competitive swimming and coaching backgrounds.

What should I bring to the assessment? A swimsuit, goggles, swim cap and towel.
